When should you start rehabbing a sprained ankle?

This is going to really sound silly. But you should start rehabbing a sprained ankle as soon as the doctor releases you for rehab.

Sometimes, you will know that the sprain is minor. Other times, depending on your tolerance for pain, you may not know how bad you sprained your ankle.

Here's the rule of thumb to follow when you sprain your ankle:

As soon as you can, get your ankle into a bucket of ice water. This will help keep the swelling down. Now it will hurt like crazy, but the healing process will be able to start sooner, so bear the pain if you can. You should keep ice on your ankle for the first 24 hours.

After that, you should determine the severity of the sprain by attempting to walk with assistance. If your ankle feels unstable or you are having excrutiating pain, then you need to get to a doctor to have your injury diagnosed.

Listen to your body. It will tell you if something is very wrong. Don't try to start any rehab program until a doctor releases you to do so.

But once the doctor confirms that you can start rehab, you need to take the most aggressive and proven approach to rehabbing that you have available. I recommend the program that I used when I was in college. It can be found at http://www.fastrehab.com . Its an instant download and easy to follow.

You will need access to a treadmill for the 1st part of the program and you will need to purchase a small piece of equipment (costs around $30) to do the rehab portion.

Don't sell yourself short and settle for some old fashion rehab regimen. Get the best.
